What kind of show it is
The Hanoi water puppet show is a joyful, thousand-year-old folk art staged on a pool of water: lacquered wooden puppets skim and splash across the surface, worked by hidden puppeteers, while a live Vietnamese orchestra and singers narrate short comic and legendary scenes. It's about 50 minutes, needs no language, and is one of the most distinctive things you can do in Hanoi — especially with children.
When to go
The Thang Long theatre runs several shows a day, including early-evening slots that are the most popular. Those go first, so pick your time and book ahead; a booked ticket also means skip-the-line entry, which matters at such a busy venue. Aim to arrive a little early to find your seat.
Where to sit
Because the seating is tiered above the water, almost every seat has a clean view. The front rows are the most fun — you're right at the pool's edge with the puppets — but you may catch a light splash; higher rows trade that for a broader, drier view. Choose based on how close to the action you want to be.
Build an Old Quarter evening
The theatre sits by Hoan Kiem Lake in the heart of the Old Quarter, so it pairs naturally with a lakeside walk, a bowl of street food and — at weekends — the night market. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before means you can lock in a showtime now and still adjust your Hanoi plans later.
